How to Identify Mahogany Furniture Versus Veneer

Mahogany is among the most expensive wood found in India. Indian furniture is replete with pieces of furniture made from mahogany. The wood was earlier used abundantly for making Indian furniture, especially during the pre-independence period. Of late the use of mahogany in Indian furniture is being controlled by the government. It's growing, felling and sale is strictly monitored by the government.
Mahogany furniture could be of plywood veneer or solid hardwood. The former type of material is often used by wooden furniture manufacturers as a cheaper or inexpensive alternative to the more expensive solid hardwood. When adequately finished, plywood veneer furniture can last as long as vintage or traditional hardwood furniture. There are several advantages and disadvantages of each product with both of them emerging ahead of each other depending on the type of application of the furniture. Both solid mahogany furniture and plywood veneer have common uses with regard to wooden furniture manufacturing.
But how does a common man distinguish between veneer and pure mahogany furniture? While this could be an easy task for a furniture expert, it's not easy for a layman.
Here's how you can distinguish between the two types of furniture.
Inspect the legs of the furniture
If the legs of the furniture are round, have round-shaped spindles, scallops, flutes, carvings or any other apparent aesthetic feature, you can be assured that the furniture is made from solid mahogany. If the legs appear square and over inches wide, then the material is veneer.
Look at the sides
Inspect the sides of the table-tops of your mahogany table. Veneered plywood would sport a grain pattern on the table's edges and will run horizontally. A solid mahogany table-top won't have any grain pattern across the edge of the table-top. The edges of a solid mahogany table will almost look black and have tiny holes. These are nothing but pores in the wood. The sides of a solid mahogany table would also have vertical splices where the separate pieces of lumber are glued together.
Pick up the furniture
Pick up the furniture so as to compare the weight to other furniture. If it is mahogany veneer, the furniture would appear to be very lightweight. In fact, it could be far lighter than what you have actually expected.
Check for color variations
Inspect the furniture for color variations. Solid mahogany wooden furniture would have fine color variations all over the furniture. You will be able to see dark streaks and darker pieces along the ends of the legs and moldings. The color usually ranges from orange-red to almost light-red to whitish streaks having light-amber color. Mahogany veneer, on the other hand, would look quite consistent, almost lifeless and benign and is unlikely to have any color variation.
Apply a general thumb rule
If you find the cost of the mahogany furniture affordable and almost comparative to what you may find at a departmental store, it's likely to be veneered mahogany. If the cost is exorbitant, then the wood could be solid mahogany.

All About Wooden Furniture Treatment

There's no denying the fact that treating wooden furniture would preserve the finish and the surface of the furniture for several decades. In fact, well-treated furniture made from wood can last over centuries. Outside furniture would surely last longer if it's properly treated. Indoor furniture, on the other hand, would be protected from inadvertent spills, pets and food, if treated properly. Besides, treating wooden furniture enhances its' beauty. There are several methods that can be adopted for keeping wooden furniture in the best possible condition. Antique furniture, however, needs to be specially treated. Wax can be used for treating and finishing some antique wood.
For a comprehensive knowledge about treating wooden furniture, read on.
History
There are numerous methods that can be adopted for treating wooden furniture. Before the advent of chemical wood conditioners and cleaners, peopled used natural oils, like lemon oil, for cleaning and conditioning wood.
Significance
Natural lemon oil is considered to be a safe alternative to the harsh chemicals that can cause damage to porous wood like pine. Wooden furniture could benefit from a temperate sanding as well. This is especially beneficial for antique or delicate furniture that's being restored. A 150 to 220-grit sandpaper could be used for helping the restoration of such type of furniture. After the furniture has been sanded, it could be treated with a wooden paint or stain and then varnished.
Function
Furniture stains treat wood by enhancing its natural color. The stain is absorbed into the wood's grain. Besides, it conditions the wood and tints it slightly. It must be kept in mind that applying a further coat of stain could darken your wood while a single coat of dark-colored stain could change the appearance of light wooden furniture. For sealing the stain, one can apply a coat of glossy varnish on the light furniture. However, this can only be applied when the stain has dried.
Types
An insect-proof and waterproof varnish for your furniture is the best to maintain a newly treated piece of wooden furniture. In fact, several furniture experts have said that this is the ideal method. For instance, a veneer table could be easily treated by gluing the lifted veneer back to its place by using wood glue. Sealants for wood also works fine for filling and hiding any gouges or scratch marks that appear on the veneer. However, the full veneer surface of the furniture may have to be replaced when the veneer of a wooden table gets severely damaged.
Benefits
Paints help in sealing the wood after the old veneer on it has been replaced or has been refinished. Priming the wood ahead of applying an enamel-based latex paint puts a coat on the surface of the veneer or wooden furniture. This makes the paint look even and smooth.
Considerations
The best way of treating wood is by cleaning it regularly. In this way dirt, bacteria and insects hidden in the dirt can't eat into your furniture and weaken the wood. This is especially true for outdoor furniture that's not protected with waterproof and insect-proof varnish.

You are likely to be rewarded with a good deal if you observe these rules. If you don't, you could return disappointed. Here some guidelines to help you out in buying cheap furniture for outdoor use.

Expensive doesn't always translate to quality

Never commit the mistake of ascertaining the quality of furniture for outdoor use simply by checking the price tag attached to the piece. Not every product that sports a high price is supposed to have impeccable quality. To put it simply, don't let the price of an outdoor furniture piece the only determining criteria for buying it. While it can be safely said that better quality wood is bound to carry an expensive tag, many piece of quality furniture are often priced reasonably.

More research leads to a lesser price

This is one of the cardinal rules of shopping and the same applies to furniture for outdoor use as well. If you are buying furniture over the internet or searching for cheap outdoor furniture, make sure that you can carry out a price comparison of the furniture pieces that you have selected. There are several websites that offer prospective buyers of outdoor furniture to compare the price and features of different furniture products at the same time. This is a good way of determining the fair price of a furniture item. If the price of a particular piece varies widely between two vendors, you can be rest assured that the vendor selling at a cheaper rate, compromises on the quality of the wood while manufacturing pieces of cheap outdoor furniture.

Check several websites

Instead of depending on one single website to purchase cheap outdoor furniture, it's always advisable to go through several websites to check the actual price of a furniture item. This is more pertinent for those who usually don't have any idea as regards furniture. As there are numerous types of woods from which cheap furniture can be manufactured, a first-time buyer can really find it difficult to strike the best bargain. This problem can be largely alleviated if one goes through an exhaustive number of furniture websites. Remember, furniture is not something that we buy every now and then. The purchase must be perfect first-time itself.

Wait for discounts
