How to Maintain and Treat Outdoor Wooden Furniture

The very idea of using wooden furniture in the outdoors is often a frightening thought of most home owners. Exposing wooden furniture to the elements of nature and potential pests conjures thoughts of the wood rotting. This, however, isn't true and furniture made from wood can be safely used outdoors for as long as you want. It only needs to be kept in mind that when the wood is correctly cared for and treated, it can withstand all exposure to the natural elements including rain and snow.
Here's how you can take care of your outdoor wooden furniture.
First, clean your wooden furniture by dusting it with the help of a feather duster. You've to take good care to clean the crevices and cracks on the furniture with the duster. If there is any grease or stains, wipe off that portion with a mild detergent. Let the furniture to dry fully ahead of proceeding.
Put a plastic drop-cloth in an airy area. Put the furniture on top of the cloth. Pour some water-repellent solution into a can and thoroughly apply the solution on your outdoor wooden furniture with some short overlapping brush strokes. Saturate every section of your furniture as you proceed. This allows the solution to deeply penetrate the grains. Then, allow the water-repellant to dry for at least two to three hours. After this, add a second coat of the solution and let the furniture to dry completely.
Cover the piece of outdoor wooden furniture with an exterior oil-based point or a wood stain with the help of a paint roller or paint brush. Do this outside the house when the weather is bright and sunny. Don't paint the furniture if it's raining, misty or damp. Roll out the bubbles on the surface of the wood. After applying the first coat of paint, allow the furniture to dry overnight.
Pour some polyurethane into a metal can. Use a big paintbrush that's normally recommended for varnishing. Dip your brush into the polyurethane and run it lightly along the edge for removing any excess product. Apply the solution on your furniture with thin and even strokes. Take care not to streak your furniture. Leave your furniture in an area that has very good air circulation. Allow the furniture to dry for at least 12 hours. Then, apply a second coat of the solution on your outdoor wooden furniture and again allow it to dry.
Check all the screws and hinges on your furniture so as to ensure that they aren't rusted. If so, replace all of them with aluminum pieces. These are rust-proof. Oil the hinges properly so that they operate smoothly sans any creaking noise.
You can protect your outdoor wooden furniture by covering it with a vinyl furniture cover during night. During the winter season, you may have to bring the furniture inside your home. If this isn't possible, cover the furniture with vinyl covers during the winter months as well. With proper care and maintenance, outdoor wooden furniture can last for ages.
