All About Walnut Wood

Growing a walnut tree requires a great commitment. It's worth all the time and effort nevertheless as the value of walnut timber has increased tremendously over the years. Although walnut wood has stiff competition from comparatively more famous wood like mahogany, it's considered as a premier hardwood for a variety of purposes.
Walnut timber comes from the family of trees known as juglandaceae. There are several types of classified walnut wood in this family. Most popular are the black walnut, the white (butternut) walnut and the English walnut. However, the most prominent type of the tree used for making lumber is American black walnut. The wood has a rich history. From colonial times, families in America have used this wood at barns and homes. Of late the wood is being grown in the upper heights of India, mostly in Kashmir, for making wooden furniture.
Walnut timer has varied uses. It's used for making wooden furniture, musical instruments like piano and wooden crafts. It's also used for making gun stocks, panels and room flooring. High quality walnut lumber is converted to veneers. These are wood slices that have an approximate thickness of 1/28 inch and usually pasted on cheaper quality wood that serves as the framework.
There are two diverse types of walnut wood depending upon the layer. While the inner layer is known as the heartwood, the outer layer is known as sapwood. The sapwood has a cream-white color and is usually about three inches wide. The heartwood, on the other hand, sports a chocolate-brown color. The surface of walnut wood has a fine grain variation. The rich and illustrious brownish color lasts for centuries and thus it's a favorite for making wooden furniture.
Walnut lumber is comparatively easy to work on both with hand and power tools. You can easily etch crispy details on the wood after routing, shaping and sanding. It's strong, shock resistant and stable. It doesn't swell or shrink easily. These are the qualities that the wooden furniture manufacturers seek. The biggest advantage is that you don't need adding a layer of stain to make it look more appealing. Besides, the natural color of walnut wood makes it look so attractive that you simply have to put a clear-coat finish. In fact, many walnut timber connoisseurs prefer not to color their wood.
The quality of walnut wood is usually judged on the probable defects that it could have. These defects include knots, insect holes, bird pecks, dead limb etc. The best patterned part of any walnut wood is usually extracted from the tree's roots. However, the quantity of wood extracted from these parts is mot much and can only be used for making small wooden ornaments. Wooden furniture requires more wood and that's derived from the body of the tree. It's pertinent to note that sawdust from walnut wood can cause irritation to the eyes, nose and skin. It could also cause serious ailments like asthma and allergies. Dust masks are highly recommended while working with walnut wood.
